SCA Conference 2006

Precincts, Parks and Ruins: the Archaeology of Ecclesiastical Landscapes

Exeter Cathedral

The 2006 Society for Church Archaeology annual conference will be held at The Loop Centre, Sowton, Exeter, over the weekend of September 15th - 17th. The conference is entitled Precincts, Parks, Ruins: the Archaeology of Ecclesiastical Landscapes.

This year the Society have teamed up with the Association of Diocesan and Cathedral Archaeologists (ADCA) to organise a conference which focuses on places of worship in relation to their wider surrounding human and physical contexts. The ideas and beliefs which shaped both social and sacred changes in ecclesiastical landscapes, and the role of religious centres in influencing these changes, are considered through the findings of excavation work, analytical investigation and academic studies. Some of this work has only recently been undertaken and the meeting will provide the opportunity for new discoveries, research and insights to be outlined.
